The opening of a lens diaphragm which controls the amount of light being admitted, which hits the digital sensor or film. The diaphragm is the mechanism used to control the amount of light.

This amount of light, which passes through the lens, is also referred to as “f-stop,” and will be revealed in numbers such as: f/2.8, f/5.6, f/11 or f/16.
