Underexposed

A barn with lack of visible detail caused by underexposure.

EXAMPLE: Underexposed image where detail is lost in the darkness.

Underexposed is when an image loses shadow detail, is too dark for your personal preference and, in extreme cases, will be completely black.

Additionally, if you meant to capture detail in a darker area but the details are “lost in the darkness,” or deep shadows, then your image is considered to be underexposed.

It may help to remember the difference between underexposure and overexposure if you think of under as not enough exposure, and over as too much exposure.
